A new morning over the sea had swimmers and divers flocking in the water already. There were those surfing on their Pokemon, sometimes with a rod on their hands. However, an ordinary day always had its quirks and a particular commotion was coming through toward Mossdeep City. They stopped whatever they were doing and turned their heads to the source of the shouting.
"Is...is that a Sharpedo?" a swimmer stuttered, pointing at the fin.
The small crowd gathered close in the same direction were parting and moving back in an alarming rate, raising the panic levels on the people watching to move away as well.
"No, no, that's just a Garchomp and he's very friendly. I've had him since he was an egg when I was eight -" the Trainer swimming with the strange group of Dragon Pokemon explained quickly before glaring at the fin. "Jian Liang, that's not funny. Raise your head this instance!"
The fin was not a Sharpedo's as he raised his head and revealed the head of a Garchomp. "Gaar."
The swimmers watched the spectacular scene before them. It wasn't just the Garchomp but a Haxorus was also swimming on one side. A couple of them pointed upward and saw a Salamence was also accompanying the flock.
Chase grinned inwardly. They have been swimming from Lilycove to Mossdeep and people were very cautious of them. Chase was quick to amend this by telling them they were used to people and offered even to a few to ride behind one of the dragons.
Hua, Chase's Deino, was the only exemption. He couldn't swim yet so he was riding along behind Shui the Dragonair. It was his first time at sea too so Chase wanted him to experience a ride. He was worth too much trouble though as every splash of salty water made him reach out and have a bite of it, crashing down with a splash. Chase immediately made a dive and grabbed Deino, reprimanding him each time but it all fell to deaf ears.
"I can see the city!” Chase told the team. He swam toward Shui and heaved himself up on his back. He hugged Hua with one arm and the other around Shui's neck. “Let's make a dash for it! Go!”
At once, the three swimming dragons gained speed and raced through the water as fast as a motorboat. Zuko the Salamence saw their figures moving faster and increased his pace in the sky as well. Chase told them to slow down upon reaching the shore so as to not alarm the people there. When they returned to dry land, a small crowd of spectators were looking at them curiously.
“Thanks, Shui,” Chase said, jumping down the Dragonair with Hua at his arms. “We'll see you later.”
Shui turned around and returned to the sea, this time diving down the water and disappearing completely.
“Tired?” Chase asked Jian Liang and Fou-Lu. The two shook their heads. “Good. A swim like that shouldn't wear off dragons of your caliber!” Chase then looked up, seeing Zuko circle above them. He called Zuko with a whistle and Zuko descended carefully. Chase opened the satchel on Zuko and pulled out a towel. He wiped the towel on Hua first and placed him down to feel the sand before drying himself up to wear a dry shirt over his naked top. Unknown to him, the Deino had eagerly walked across the sand and was getting close to the people in the beach. Jian Liang and Fou-Lu were busy receiving attention than to notice their junior messing around.

thoroughly soaked and feeling less than accommodating at the moment, zafaar surfaced from the water. it was not in the freaking least fair to be swimming and competing with dragon pokémon. or competing against anything that belonged to chase edenbreath, or the young man himself. for one, the man had muscles the size of baby cleffa and could probably wrestle a young dragon if he wanted to. zafaar didn't care, though; he lost every single goddamn time to chase and wasn't bothered by it. it was just how things worked, and things worked against him when he was with chase.
such was their friendship that he could even put up with chase's (eventual) lecturing on how he should be trying harder. "thanks," he mumbled to the psychic-type that floated up to him, towel in hand. towel retrieved from umnia, zafaar promptly got his upper body dry. it was sunny, yes, and he'd dry off quickly, but he wanted to himself dry before sand got onto him. it was totally like the kids at the beach to be inconsiderate and fling sand at him; once again, not that it mattered, but getting sand out of his hair was a terrible chore.
his alert eyes soon caught the sight of a deino wandering around. now, they weren't exactly common pokémon, nor did they belong to the beach. as a matter of fact, it was ... someone's. an eye darted towards chase. he was busy pulling on a shirt over his top; exhaling lightly, zafaar walked across the beach and stopped in front of hua with an apprehensive gaze. "hua," his baritone cut across the sea breeze, "go back to edenbreath. you're getting too close -" he glanced over his shoulder, "to the crowds." you'd get lost was what he wanted to add, but he held his tongue.

The Deino paused in recognition of Zafaar's voice. Although he had been consistently trained to utilize his sense of hearing to compensate for his permanent blindness, Hua persisted to favor his sense of taste. He did the most logical thing and snapped at Zafaar's ankle with a quick, expert bite.
Finally clothed, Chase noticed that Hua had strayed from his side. "Oh no..." he muttered. He couldn't even get a shirt over his head without Hua getting out of his sight. Unlike his dragon comrades, Hua was not friendly to people or anything in general. His bites were small but painful, not to mention just rude. When Chase found the familiar purple dragon, his worry turned to delight.
"Nice job, Zafaar!" Chase said to his friend. Rather than pull Hua away, Chase gave Zafaar a pat on the back enough to knock a person on the ground. It's the pat he usually gave to his Pokemon. Dragon Pokemon. Big, tough, Dragon Pokemon. "I think you took too long swimming for someone who's been under extensive training. You have better try to get stronger or you might not be able to fight back if evil trouble comes. Maybe it's the tea you kept on drinking...” Chase frowned contemplatively. “Are you sure you're making them correctly? Normally, they're healthy for the body but you can't even nudge Fou-Lu with a push.” Behind Chase, the Haxorus nodded in agreement. “It's a good idea that we went here to Mossdeep. There's a cave up in the north and we can swim there to train," Chase said, nodding his head and crossing his arms. "After we take a tour in the city, I think that's a good idea."
He looked down and frowned disapprovingly. “Hua, I told you not to bite unless I order you to!”

without care for young ears, zafaar's response was quick: "fuck!" the teenager frowned, steadying himself despite the stinging pain in his leg. his face, however, remained largely calm and expressionless even as he directed a stern gaze in chase's direction. the dragon trainer was his usual chirpy (to the imperia boy's silent annoyance) self, but it was more of happiness that he shared some sort of bond with his dragons. zafaar returned the compliment with nothing more than a silent nod, then returned his eyes to the dragon holding on tightly to his leg. he gritted his teeth, trying to yank his leg out, but something unexpected happened, which was completely like chase.
zafaar wasn't quite used to it, even though it had been five years since they'd first met.
he crumpled to the ground, deino, towel and all. he groaned into the sand, shutting his eyes immediately. he usually was able to withstand the strong pat, but after swimming with dragon pokémon, getting bitten by a creature too strong for its size, zafaar wasn't exactly mr. armstrong. he muttered a muffled curse into the rough sand, then gave up trying to tell chase about how it wasn't the tea, but more of how he was flooring him quite literally at every chance he got. the teenager shifted slightly, eying the edenbreath from the corners of his eyes. "it's not the tea, edenbreath," he muttered, picking himself up after mustering quite the amount of strength.
finally free from hua's jaws, he tried to stop the bleeding by wrapping his towel around it and watched as parts of it was soaked crimson. "and fou-lu is huge," he grunted, knowing full well he'd lose in a battle of words to chase - but then again, he'd lose in a pokémon battle as well. he'd lost once, he'd lost twice and probably would if he ever was foolish enough the twenty-three-year-old again. still, he had a certain amount of respect for the man that he refused to admit.
he exhaled calmly. swim up to the cave ... that was just chase. only he'd want to swim and brave the currents; chase d'eon edenbreath was a man of strength, responsibility and ... justice. getting there on khalif was totally out of the question. chase'd accuse him of slacking off! "why. why swim." it was a futile attempt to sway chase of his decision, zafaar realized, but he figured he'd humor the conversation a little and make it less one-sided.
beside him, umnia floated with a napping ikram in her arms.

"Fou-Lu's a kid," Chase said with dismissively, rubbing the five feet tall Pokemon lovingly on the head. "He's five years old and Dragon Pokemon have three times the life expectancy of a human." He lowered his hand and made a sigh. "But that's if the Pokemon is lucky. Even though they're powerful and strong, Dragon Pokemon only seek solitude in their long lives but many capture them for destruction and fighting. They're family, not weapons..."
Zafaar read Chase like an open book and as he had expected, Chase took his words akin to complaining. "You're just trying to slack off," he said sternly. There was a high possibility he had accused Zafaar the same thing before. "I thought you were serious with training. If you are then you can't waste a second not training unless you're using it for others. For example, you could help out Rangers scout forests (does that a lot), pick up litters in the beach (did that), scrub an old man's back (did that), fix broken roofs (did that), rescue a Skitty from a tree (did that, although it was Hua's fault it got stuck in the first place), trim an overly grown lawn (did that)..."
At last when Chase was finished, he finally paid attention to Zafaar's injury. "Don't you know how to do first-aid on bites yet?" Chase shook his head and beckoned Zuko to come. He placed Hua on Zuko and rummaged at the items inside of his bag. He took out a jug of cool water, rubbing alcohol, betadine, and a roll of bandage.
"This isn't going to hurt, I promise."
Rubbing alcohol = 40% solution.
Chase would kneel down and take off the wrapped towel and wash the wound with water and rub it with alcohol (which "isn't going to hurt") before applying betadine and wrapping it tightly with the bandage. He had gotten bad injuries before and had scars as a souvenir from his training with dragons. Although he could be a little too cautious, Chase paid little attention to himself. As the saying goes, no pain no gain. He did, however, fear endangering others. Like Zafaar for instance. He could be quite irresponsible and forgetful sometimes that he was a danger to himself! The kid couldn't even stand the hug of a 200 pound dragon that could crush boulders into tiny pieces in one swipe of its tail.
Chase shook his head. Zafaar really needed to drink tea and sleep less and climb some 25, 000 feet mountains more.

this was not going well. whenever chase broke out into a tangent like this, something bad was going to happen. subconsciously, he dragged his wounded leg closer to him and hugged both legs closer to himself. chase can do all those heroic stuff and more. he couldn't care less; he just wanted to go sleep somewhere and be unproductive for once. zafaar held back a scowl as the dragon trainer dug up incessant memories of the times where he was forced against him will to do something - and with good reason he did them, too - zuko (or was it jian liang?) was breathing down his neck, mere inches away.
he shut his crimson eyes and his jaw tightened. no, he did not know how to do first-aid on bites even though he'd been on the receiving end of too many to count. they generally healed just fine, and unless he was sixty or older, he did not see anything wrong with natural healing. but chase had to! he had to know everything (zafaar had a sneaking suspicion that he'd read all the books in various libraries), had to handle everything and deliver holy justice. justice, his foot. he'd rather be left alone snoozing atop khalif on some kind of body of water.
"it is going to - f -"
he never liked medicine.
zafaar flinched, pulling his leg away from chase, but the other's grip was too tight. he buried his face in the soft towel, allowing his wound to be treated only because he knew it'd hurt more if he resisted. he had a vague memory of a dragon holding him down while he was force-fed ... some kind of herb. "just leave it alone," muttered the imperia, swatting at chase. "it'll heal." as if proving that he was right, he stood up (it hurt, though) and glanced at chase, but soon after realized his mistake in doing so. if he was now standing, it meant he was fine, and he'd be slapped in the face with more activities, more chores, more everything. and if he wanted a break, he'd be called a slacker. what the heck, edenbreath.
"why do you have all those ... stuff?" he questioned, wanting some kind of conversation to take his mind off the nagging pain in his leg.

Chase wasn't convinced. "I don't think you should be stand-" He stopped himself when a thought hit him. What if...Zafaar was lying? Well, he already guessed as much and Zafaar wouldn't be running anytime soon, but what if the lad just wanted to prove he was okay to make himself look tough? Perhaps he should give Zafaar more credit. Perhaps Zafaar actually wanted to do something productive and he didn't want some injury to stop him. Now that's determination! Chase had just found greater respect in this young man. Truly Zafaar was a great Trainer!
His thought were interrupted when Zafaar brought up the question. Chase gathered the items and placed them back inside his bag before answering, "A first-aid kit? It's only natural for Trainers to bring one! Imagine the dangers of travelling and training. I've never been unscathed even for one day in a training with anyone,” he gestured to the dragons, “Besides, I don't want anyone to get hurt around my watch or because of me for that matter...” He looked sullen at the last spoken words.
“Zafaar, you need to get stronger! Much, much stronger!” Chase said all of a sudden, clenching his hands into fists. “You told me that you're looking for someone. If you can't keep your head in the game, then you'll never find him.” His eyes fell on the hastily bandaged bite. “We'd have to scratch the swimming to Shoal Cave today though with that kind of wound as much and I know how excited you were for training, but it has to wait for now,” he said with a serious face and a stern look that said nothing Zafaar would say would change his mind. “I was planning to walk around the city with Fou-Lu and the others. I noticed the locals are not very used to Dragon Pokemon. I believe they need to interact with them to know that they're good, harmless Pokemon. With your ankle, I think you should rest it a little.”
Chase then turned and held Hua on his hands. “...and if you don't mind, could you babysit Hua while you're at it? He doesn't bite the same person twice and now he recognizes you at least. I can't bring him around too many people yet with his attitude problem and I don't really like putting them inside Pokeballs.”
Chase wasn't usually the one to trust his Pokemon – especially the Pokemon requiring special, professional attention to others but he felt that deep inside, Zafaar wanted to prove himself! If Chase was in Zafaar's shoes, he would feel being left behind to be dishonorable and pathetic. Chase didn't want Zafaar to experience doing nothing and thought it best to offer an important job while he was resting. Clearly, this was a great plan!
[Hope you didn't mind I made the assumption Zafaar told him about that someone. I figure he must have said it once to Chase after those five years they've been together. If you don't think Zafaar would have told Chase something like that, I can fix this quick.]

zafaar was silent, as per usual. chase didn't want anyone hurt; that was something he'd learned after like, five or so years hanging around the guy. it struck him as especially true, considering how they were constantly training with things that could blow up cities, buildings ... and much more. it was at this moment that the teenager felt a certain pang that made him suddenly grateful to be alive. and to stay the heck away from taming his own dragon; the task was best left to someone in the edenbreath family, if chase was anything to go by. he exhaled, then awaited the inevitable tangent to arrive. it did.
and the teenager felt a sudden rush of gratefulness. he'd be able to take the rest of the day off. sitting around, doing nothing - since when had he ... oh. he still had to babysit the stupid deino. okay, he'd do that and hope that hua wasn't going to bite his head off. his crimson eyes fell on the dark-colored dragon pokémon. could he even trust chase ... ? babysit hua and hope that he wouldn't bite him again? the boy quirked an eyebrow and glanced once again, at the deino. everything should be alright ... nothing bad would happen. if it did - chase edenbreath, man of justice - ...
umnia set ikram down by zafaar and gestured to chase to hand her the baby dragon. "kururu," she murmured with a nod at chase. hua would be safe with her~! she then glanced at zafaar, was had turned away in silence. being left behind to do nothing was just fine a plan, but chase had to put hua into the equation ... and he now had two equations to solve. substitution, algebra, whatever. even his brief internship at the trainer database hq wasn't that complicated.
"yeah, hand him over. h - i'll be fine."

Chase turned solemnly to Zafaar, placed a mighty hand on his shoulder, and met his eyes intently.
"I wish you luck," he said to a soldier going to war.
...wait what?
Chase turned around and beckoned his Pokemon to follow. Zuko turned his head to the sky and flapped his orange wings before setting off, leaving a gust of wind. The other two followed Chase, trailing behind by his side. The watching spectators slowly dispersed although they were still muttering about the Trainer with the dragon just freely walking through the streets. Some were pointing at Zafaar, wondering how he was connected to him.
Chase left feeling proud for Zafaar and fulfilled for having done his part as a friend. Now he could take all the time he needed to tour around the city with the others and get the locals to interact with the Dragon Pokemon. He heard that there was a space center too and though none of them were going to see the space someday, it would be a learning experience to see some science!
Back with Hua, now that he was on someone else's arms, he began to feel uneasy. He moved restlessly on Umnia's grip, squirming to get on the ground, and was now snapping his mouth in the air dangerously. He wouldn't bite Zafaar again (according to Chase) but he was going to take a bite at Umnia soon.

"oh, fuck."
now that there were no children or chase around, he was free to laze arou - despite his thoughts, reality wasn't so forgiving. hua was trying to bite chunks out of umnia. the reuniclus was frowning at the dragon, shaking him rather violently before setting him down. hua, no, she called, frowning as she trailed him. she crossed her arms, eyes watching the deino calmly and with a certain air of ... quietness. wish them luck? was something up with mr. edenbreath? she wondered, but did not ask.
"maybe if you let him bite you, he'll listen," muttered zafaar, throwing some sand in the general direction of the deino. so much for having half a day off. saddled with the task of having a little pokémon stronger than most of the creatures making up his team, zafaar was left feeling less than accomplished. he didn't want to do anything! "just kidding, umnia," he hastily murmured after the psychic-type shot him a glare. with a groan, he buried his face in his towel and sighed.
"hua, come here." he reached out, and tried to grab the dangerous beast. it was worse than hunting ursaring twice the average size or diving to save drowning pokémon who had accidentally wandered into the sea. or something else. he couldn't be bothered, but the least he could do was stop hua from gnawing someone's head off.

Hua was finally realizing that Chase was no longer around and had left him to his traveling companion for reasons beyond him. He made sniffing noises to make sure before an easily recognizable grin formed at his wide, open mouth. In all his life, he'd never been separated from that Trainer and now...
FREEEEEEEDOOOOMMM
Hua celebrating meant making a lot of snarling noises, which sounded something like an insane amount of evil chuckling. If he had eyes, they would be looking very ecstatic right now with one of the pupils dilating into marbles. He didn't like Chase, he didn't like being ordered around, he didn't like not being able to bite. He just wanted to do what he wanted.
The Deino made a mad dash across the sand. He couldn't see a thing but he was used to tripping and falling that he'd just stand up again without problems. He was too used to the world of pain that things that happen to blind Pokemon didn't matter to Hua. He could hear the alarmed screams of humans moving out of his way as he carelessly snapped his jaw threateningly in the air. He wouldn't really bite them...or maybe he would. Hua's smile grew bigger. He could smell some nearby Pokemon. This was probably one of the few things Hua would thank Chase for: teaching him how to use his sense of smell to the fullest. Having to bite everything was fun but it could be troublesome to just blindly bite in the air where he could feel a slight wind in a movement.
Hua was heading over to a Krabby lounging in the sand. He opened his mouth, ready to om-nom-nom-nom.

this was the reason why zafaar liked hua.
he was always unpredictable, and always ran around doing the unexpected. from his vantage point several feet away, he didn't feel in the least like moving, perhaps because of his leg and natural tendency to become lethargic when nothing interested him. umnia, on the other hand, looked a little worried. what she did to stop him was entirely ineffective, for she was a psychic-type, and most of her restraining moves came in the form of a psychic-typed move. therefore, she was completely useless until ikram stirred.
lightning danced from her cheeks as she geared up for thunder wave. the beam of electricity danced across the sand, but she had misjudged the distance and ended up impacting a beachgoer's radio. undeterred and unfazed by the tremendous amount of garbage the device was starting to spew, she continued with another paralyzing bolt, this time her aim true and towards hua. having done her part and wanting nothing further to do with the matter, she settled back, comfortably too, upon zafaar's lap and tried to fall asleep again. umnia, of course, was horrified. were things going to end in godzilla-like destruction?
not wanting the beach to fall into shambles by the time chase came back (not to mention undo all the 'dragons-are-good' propaganda that he'd probably been spreading), she frantically prodded zafaar in shoulder, then glanced at hua, who was heading over to a krabby. frankly, the trainer couldn't be assed. "just leave him be. he'd gain a couple levels because of this and edenbreath would be so damn happy." with that said, zafaar placed his towel over his head, shut his eyes, and tried his best to imagine a situation where hua was out of the equation, and preferably, in one of chase's pokéballs.
umnia was disappointed. severely disappointed, actually, but she was powerless.

In fact, it seemed like it didn't affect him at all. Hua might not have evolved yet but he was strong just like any of Chase's Pokemon. No dragon Pokemon under the dedicated man would be anything below than perfection. Surely, he had underwent through crazier training than to let some weak jolt to paralyze him. Being stubborn was also a useful quality to keep the body moving, which was what Hua mostly had.
Hua inched toward the Krabby and bit its tough, hard pincer. The Krabby turned and blinked at the Deino, wondering what the heck it was doing. Although the Krabby was not in any form of pain, it frowned at the saliva dripping on his pincer and the ugly marks left on the surface. Now angered for being made a chew toy, the Krabby brought its other pincer and retaliated, smacking Hua on the head. Hua froze up completely as the Krabby pulled its pincer out of its mouth and trotted away, grumbling. The Deino was still until it crashed on the sand like a rock, its foot twitching. If Hua had eyes, they would be spinning in dizziness.
Hua had fainted! Would you like to use another Pokemon?
"Mommy, is that Pokemon dead?" a girl in a tube asked, pointing at Hua.
"I don't think so, but it looks like it fainted. Isn't that its Trainer?" the woman said, looking over at Zafaar's direction and frowning at his indifference. What kind of Trainer would let a Pokemon wander off?

umnia was nearly stunned by fear. was the deino dead? the krabby sure as hell did a good job in knocking him out ... nervous, she glided over to him and peered through arms covering her face. oh no, he wasn't moving. surely he must be dead! reckoned the reuniclus as she glanced back at zafaar, then at the knocked-out dragon. she prodded him lightly, but wasn't exactly hoping for a miracle in the sense that he'd wake up and start biting people again. this time, she'd gladly let him take a chunk out of her if it meant the safety of others ... relative safety, for she wasn't quite sure how this little tyke worked.
the words of the little girl and her mother reached zafaar's ears, and he grumbled something in indignation. he'd barely only gotten the energy to even fall asleep. "me? hua's trainer?" he grunted, burying his head deeper into the towel. he was slightly perplexed; normally, these kind of comments did not bother him, but this time, it did. it was rather strange, to be bothered by comments like that - more so when the fact that the deino wasn't even his to begin with was considered. "idiots." ikram gurgled something in her sleep, and zafaar nodded. he wasn't sure what she said, but it felt good to think, no, assume that someone agreed with what he had to say.
"umnia," he called to the psychic-type, "just cart him back here and hope he doesn't wake up until edenbreath comes back." the reuniclus snorted, rather loudly, too. "what?" demanded the teenager, frowning slightly as he glanced up from the soft confines of the towel. umnia clearly wasn't going to cooperate, and it was as if she was demanding he take charge of the situation and, also, that he admit it was his fault.
zafaar imperia, admit his faults to his own pokémon? ... what was he, mr. humble of the year? he shook his head. he wasn't going to admit he was wrong; chase'd understand anyway. ikram was snoozing on him, too, and if he budged, he had to be ready to deflect a tail of iron. "just pick him up, okay? i'm fu -" umnia glared at him, "cussing sorry."

The Salamence dived down from the sky, whipping some sand in the air as he descended beside Umnia. He gave the Psychic a small, a bit shy smile as a friendly greeting but it vanished quickly when he saw Hua. He didn't seem angry for whatever put Hua in this state. Many of them faint during training especially on freezing river meditations and sparring versus other dragons, but this was different. Hua was just an embarrassment. Zuko didn't know what exactly hit the Deino, but nothing on the beach should have been enough to knock him out cold like this. It was a good thing Chase wasn't here to see this. One of his proud dragons unconscious in the middle of a human territory - it was just too embarrassing.
Feeling ashamed, Zuko brought Hua over to Zafaar than to let Umnia do it. He approached Zafaar, knowing that he had been left in charge of Hua. Zuko had no idea why Chase would do it but none of them really questioned Chase before. Zuko should be in the position to since he and Chase were supposed to be partners but Zuko was like Zafaar when it came to Chase. Zuko didn't mind just following Chase around although Zuko didn't think Chase was a bit extreme in his ways as Zafaar would.
He placed the unconscious Pokemon on the sand and turned his head around to bite on his Trainer's bag placed on his back. He prodded the bag to Zafaar where bottles jingled inside. Since it was little Hua's foolishness, they should be the one paying for the trouble he caused. Inside the bag were some Revive (Chase carrying more of those than Potions) which Zafaar could use for Hua. At least, that was what Zuko was expecting Zafaar to do anyway and not leave the Deino unconscious.
